The Château de la Grange-Bléneau
This 14th century fortified manor house is the birthplace of the famous general, the marquis de La Fayette. It has been refurbished and restored several times over the course of its history. Today the house is classified as a “Maison des Illustres” (famous home) and is the property of the Josée and René de Chambrun Foundation, a charitable foundation charged with preserving the castle and its historical contents.
The Correspondence of George Washington at Mount Vernon
A recently discovered cache of letters between George Washington and the Marquis de Chastellux are sure to delight. Chastellux was an enlightenment thinker and general in the French army during the American War of Independence. The letters exhibit a level of candour which sets them apart from other of the General’s correspondence. Mount Vernon has already purchased 5 of these letters but more remain in France as yet uncatalogued and in the possession of the original family. We would like to see more exhibited to the public and have the letters properly catalogued.
