Golden Doors to Infinity

Published: June 11, 2021

William Adair founded Gold Leaf Studios in 1982. Based in Washington, D.C., he is an internationally recognized authority on frame fabrication, conservation, gilding, and large-scale architectural gilding.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day, Adair installed a golden door on Omaha Beach on the Normandy coast of Northern France. Through his Golden Doors to Infinity project, he collects abandoned doors, covers them with gold leaf, and repurposes them as entryways to landmark historical events. Visitors and passersby have an opportunity to leave messages on the doors to remember and celebrate the shared cultural values inspired by each site.
