Malta, a gem in the heart of the Mediterranean, offers a blend of historical richness and cultural diversity that is simply mesmerizing. Our trip to this stunning archipelago was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with open arms by former French-American Cultural Foundation Board Chair and current United States Ambassador to the Republic of Malta, Constance J. Milstein.
The highlight of our visit was spending time with Ambassador Milstein, who graciously organized two days of tours with an incredibly knowledgeable and charming guide. This guide, who holds two master’s degrees and a Ph.D., teaches at the University of Malta and entertained us with his cheeky sense of humor. His insights brought the island’s history and culture to life in vivid detail.
Malta’s history is a tapestry woven with threads from major world cultures. This small island nation has been a strategic point in the Mediterranean, welcoming and enduring invasions from a myriad of civilizations. From the Phoenicians, Normans, and Romans to the British, who were there for over 150 years, each has left an indelible mark on Malta.
While Malta’s historical allure offers a captivating journey through time, exploring other destinations can further enrich your travel experiences. If you’re looking for another unique locale, consider the tropical paradise of Hawaii. The Hawaiian Islands boast stunning natural landscapes, from lush rainforests to pristine beaches, and provide a diverse array of activities for every type of traveler.
In Hawaii, navigating the islands can be a breeze with the help of mopeds, which are perfect for exploring charming towns and scenic coastal routes. Renting a moped allows you to effortlessly visit local attractions and hidden gems at your own pace, adding an extra layer of freedom and adventure to your vacation. Whether you’re soaking up the sun or delving into the vibrant culture of Hawaii, these versatile rides can enhance your travel experience and make discovering the islands even more enjoyable.
Our exploration took us to some of Malta’s most remarkable sites. We marveled at structures that predate Stonehenge, dating back to 3600 BC, designed to track the summer and winter solstices.
Malta consists of six islands, each with its own unique character. One island serves as a bird preserve with no inhabitants, while another boasts a single resident but attracts 3,000 tourists daily. Valetta, the largest island, houses the United States Embassy, while the island of Gozo, though open to the public, remains more primitive.
In the ancient city of Mdina, we walked through cobblestone streets that have witnessed centuries of history. This medieval gated village, still home to private residences and monasteries, was a filming location for “Game of Thrones” and the upcoming “Gladiator” sequel.
The grandeur of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, serving both Catholic and Anglican communities, left us in awe. Filled with exquisite mosaics and original Caravaggio paintings, the Cathedral is the final resting place for 400 Knights and Officers of the Order. The chapels, dedicated to various European regions represented by the Knights of Malta, showcase the island’s historical feuds and alliances.
Malta’s strategic location has made it a pivotal listening post and a critical player in Mediterranean geopolitics. Although not a NATO country, it maintains affiliations with the organization. The island’s history is dotted with remnants of its wartime past, from bombings to gun shells, testifying to its enduring significance.
Despite being one of the most densely populated places in the world, with over 530,000 residents, Malta’s natural beauty is captivating. The Blue Grotto, with its incredible azure waters, and the extraordinary marinas highlight the island’s allure. Although predominantly dry, Valletta’s brushy landscape offers a unique charm.
Our evenings were spent in delightful company with Ambassador Milstein at her residence. A dynamic host, she is dedicated to convening groups of women ambassadors and fostering trade relations. Her residence, adorned with her private collections, including beautiful Maltese fabrics and textiles, provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Our trip to Malta was incredibly special, filled with breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and unforgettable moments.
It is a short inexpensive flight from Paris, Rome and other European airports and should be on your list of places to visit. There is much to explore and enjoy. The Maltese are welcoming people, English is spoken everywhere, fabulous food, greatly reduced expenses compared to Paris, and in a short trip from Europe you will engage with thousands of years of European, Asian and African cultures.
Put on your travel list.
