He left a privileged life and set sail across an ocean at age 19 to fight for a cause most considered hopeless…

More commonly known simply by his surname, Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, is a name that resonates deeply in the annals of American history.

As a young French nobleman, Lafayette was drawn to the American Revolution’s ideals of liberty and freedom. His unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions played a crucial role in securing American independence. His close relationship with George Washington, his military prowess, and his diplomatic efforts to secure French support were instrumental in the success of the American Revolution.

In 1824, nearly fifty years after the Revolution, Lafayette embarked on a grand tour of the United States at the invitation of President James Monroe. This tour was intended to celebrate the nation’s 50th anniversary and to reignite patriotism amidst a contentious national election.

Lafayette’s return was more than a diplomatic gesture; it was a triumphant reunion that highlighted his enduring legacy and the deep bond between France and the United States. His tour lasted 13 months, during which he visited all 24 states, receiving a hero’s welcome in every city and town.

The bicentennial anniversary of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour is a reminder of his unwavering dedication to the principles of liberty, equality, and human rights. Lafayette was not only a hero of the American Revolution but also a lifelong advocate for abolitionism, religious freedom, and women’s equality. His ideals and actions continue to inspire generations.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour, a series of events are planned across the United States, mirroring his journey through the original 24 states. The celebrations will kick off in New York City on August 16, 2024, and will span over thirteen months, concluding in Washington D.C.
