Arrival in Paris and a Visit to Maison Mellerio
On Thursday, September 26th, the adventure began with a warm welcome in the City of Light.
Guests were treated to an exclusive tour of Maison Mellerio, Paris’ oldest jewelry house. Established in 1613, this family-run business has crafted exquisite pieces for royalty and discerning clientele for centuries. The Maison houses an extensive archive that tells a story of artisan exceptionalism, unique design, owners, and the history of monarchies.
We marveled at the craftsmanship and legacy of this historic Maison while enjoying an intimate viewing of its most treasured creations and also the newest pieces on offer.
Exploring French History and Culture
Friday, September 27th, provided a blend of history and culture. Can the two be separated?
The day began with an optional visit to the Foire de Chatou, a renowned charming flea market, which only occurs twice a year, located on the grounds of Renoir’s famous painting “Luncheon of the Boating Party.” We strolled through stalls filled with antiques, art, and vintage treasures, soaking up the relaxed, nostalgic atmosphere.
In the afternoon, participants regrouped for a private tour of the Banque de France’s Galerie Dorée, led by Arnaud Manas, Head of the Historical Heritage and Archives Department. This stunning gallery, often compared to the famous Galerie des Glaces at Versailles, is an architectural masterpiece that remains unknown to many tourists. A champagne reception followed, allowing guests to bask in the opulent surroundings.
The day concluded with hors d’oeuvres and champagne at Cercle de l’Union Interalliée, where the group celebrated French-American relations in one of Paris’ most prestigious private clubs.
Art, Diplomacy, and the Splendor of Versailles
On Saturday, September 28th, guests were invited to a private reception at Weber House, the Residence of Ambassador Sean Patrick Maloney, U.S. Ambassador to the OECD (Office of Economic and Cultural Development.) We were delighted to experience the art curation in the Residence with Megan Beyer, Director of the Office of Art in Embassies at the U.S. Department of State.
Here, we enjoyed a champagne breakfast and toured the impressive Art in Embassies collection, showcasing works that underscore the role of art in diplomacy. The gorgeous hospitality offered in the way of music, food, and champagne was an exhibit of art in itself!
Later in the day, guests made their way to Versailles and checked in at the luxurious Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace. The evening began with an exclusive tour of the King’s private apartments and those of Madame du Barry. Led by Heritage Curator Lionel Arsac, we stepped behind velvet ropes as Lionel unlocked doors to rooms typically closed to the public, offering a rare glimpse into the intimate spaces of Versailles. His commentary brought to life the stories of these opulent rooms and the lives of those who once walked their halls, illuminating details of the décor and hidden histories not often shared with visitors.
The ADOR Gala at Versailles
The grand finale of the trip was the much-anticipated ADOR (Amies de Opera Royal) Gala at Versailles on Sunday, September 29th. The evening kicked off with a champagne reception in the Crusades Room, followed by a breathtaking concert, Joyaux du Bel Canto, performed at the Royal Opera. The night unfolded with cocktails in the Hercules Room, a musical interlude in the Royal Chapel, and a royal tour of the Hall of Mirrors.
Our President, Debra Dunn, was asked to join Christophe Leribault, President of Versailles, to make remarks from the stage. It was the first time an American would address the audience in English.
The evening culminated in a grand supper in the Gallery of Great Battles, where guests dined surrounded by monumental paintings depicting the rich history of France, followed by a spectacular fireworks display in the Hall of Mirrors. It was a night to remember – an elegant, art-filled celebration of history, culture, diplomacy and friendship.
As we bid farewell to Versailles, the bonds of friendship between France and America were strengthened through shared experiences, beauty, and a deep appreciation for the art of living.
The French-American Cultural Foundation’s annual trip was truly an unforgettable journey, filled with unique cultural moments and meaningful connections.
