An Extraordinary Journey: 200 Days Alone on a Secret Atoll

This December, the French-American Cultural Foundation is proud to present the world premiere screening of Alone on a Secret Atoll, a new documentary from Galatée Films, the acclaimed French production company founded by actor, director, and producer Jacques Perrin. The event will take place at the Maison Française, Embassy of France in Washington, D.C.

Filmed in the crystalline waters of French Polynesia, Alone on a Secret Atoll is a rare cinematic experience – both visually arresting and profoundly introspective.

The film follows biologist Matthieu Juncker, who sets out to live in complete solitude for 200 days on an uninhabited atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago. His mission: to observe nature without interruption, to witness its rhythms and fragility firsthand, and to document an ecosystem that stands as one of the most vulnerable on our planet.

For two decades, Juncker has dedicated his work to understanding the Pacific’s delicate living systems. Over time, he has seen the quiet unraveling of the intricate balances that sustain these islands, where every tide, bird, and grain of sand carries a story of survival.

Among the creatures he studies is the Titi, a small Pacific wader now perilously close to extinction. In many ways, the Titi mirrors humanity’s own precarious relationship with nature: resilient, adaptive, and yet profoundly fragile.

To live alone for 200 days in this remote expanse required not only scientific rigor but also a deep humility before the living world. Juncker’s daily routine – built around observing, recording, and coexisting with the island’s rhythms – becomes a meditation on connection and endurance.

The result is a documentary that transcends science to reveal something elemental about the human spirit: our capacity to belong to nature, not stand apart from it.

This film continues Galatée Films’ legacy of environmental storytelling through breathtaking visual narratives. From Winged Migration to Oceans and Seasons, the studio has long illuminated the beauty and complexity of the natural world while urging reflection on humanity’s place within it. This new film continues that tradition, inviting viewers to see through the eyes of a scientist – and perhaps, to rediscover a sense of awe often lost in modern life.

For the French-American Cultural Foundation, this partnership reflects a shared commitment to fostering understanding through art, science, and storytelling.

By bringing French voices and visions to American audiences, the Foundation celebrates not just cultural connection, but a deeper dialogue around our collective responsibility to the Earth we inhabit.

The Washington, D.C. screening marks the world premiere of Alone on a Secret Atoll. A second presentation will follow in Houston in February 2026, extending the film’s reach to new audiences eager to experience its rare beauty and urgency.

Alone on a Secret Atoll is, at its heart, a testament to endurance, reverence, and discovery. It is a film that speaks not only of solitude, but of belonging – and of the fragile, wondrous balance that sustains life across oceans and generations.
