Did you know there’s a French connection to the origins of Yellowstone National Park?
Toward the end of the 1700s, French trappers were among the first Europeans to visit the region, naming the river that runs through the park Roche Jaune. It is believed that this is a translation of the Hidatsa name that translates to Yellow Rock River. Eventually, the French name was translated to English and that is how it became Yellow Stone.
Yellowstone National Park was the first national park established in the United States, and it is believed to be the first national park in the world. Located primarily in Wyoming with smaller portions in the neighboring states of Montana and Idaho, Yellowstone is known for its geothermal features and wildlife.
The park is currently closed due to the conoravirus outbreak, but you can visit it online from home. The virtual tour takes you to locations such as Fort Yellowstone, Fountain Paint Pot, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and Mammoth Hot Springs.
