Confinement Chronicles: It’s like being on a space station

Published: May 22, 2020

William Adair founded Gold Leaf Studios in 1982. Based in Washington, D.C., he is an internationally recognized authority on frame fabrication, conservation, gilding, and large-scale architectural gilding.

I have been quarantined for 2 months.

It’s like being on a space station, so I picked up a lamp globe and wore it to be sure no virus would fly into the air. It was less confining than the mask and afforded the protection needed.

I set up my gilded and inscribed doors in a hallway at the studio and am now working on a 15 minute film for Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies. Their Summer Solstice “Festival of the Muses” (part of the continuous cycle for the Oracle of Delphi celebrations in 2021) calls for gilded doors to be installed with toga clothed “Isadora Duncan dancers” within the Ancient ruins of Delphi.
